What are cave paintings? Beautiful, detailed and colorful representations found on the inside of cave walls and cielings.

Name several common themes found in cave paintings? Large animals such as Bisons, Horses, and Deer.

How were these paintings created (tools, pigments)? Mixing water, plant juice, animal blood, soil, charcoal, and a form of iron oxide.

What is the most famous cave painting site? When was it discovered and by whom?Post an example of cave painting(s) from this cave. Most famous site was in Lascaux, France. Discovered in 1940 by 4 teenage boys.

Why did this cave have to be closed? What was done to satisfy public curiosity? It was being damaged by the carbon dioxide by the tourists.

In Altamira cave, why do most of the paintings have a red hue? It is caused by the red clay in the soil.

Who discovered this site? How old are the paintings confirmed to be? It was discovered bt Marceline Sanz De Sautuola and his daughter Maria. The paintings are to be 19,000 years ago.

What is the oldest known cave painting site? When was it discovered and by whom?Post an example of cave painting(s) from this cave. The oldest is known as Chauvet Point Arc. It was discovered by three speleogists in 1994. (On the left)

What was different about the painting techniques at this site? The walls were scraped clear of debris and a 3D effect was created.

What is "speleology"? It is the scientific study of caves.

What three reasons do archeologists and historians believe prehistoric man created cave paintings? To tell a story that already happened, to teach techniques for hunting. and created for religious reason that if an image of something that will come true.

Assignment 13- Research and Inspiration

Exquisite Corpse- collection of images that collectively assembled. (Wikipedia) It came from a game called Consequences in 1918 then became a visual game. The surrealists invented this game, which was an art movement.

I liked that the feet look like its a tree trunk.

In this one, I liked that they made the head as if it was a giraffe.

This one is my favorite. I loved how they added a head spitting water out.

STEPS:

• Research- look in the Internet or in a magazines, listen to music, pay attention to the world around you; whatever you need to inspire you.
• Brainstorming- fresh and creative approach; striving to be unique and innovative while still following the current trends. Ask yourself- What kind of message am I trying to communicate? Who is my audience? What am I trying to say? What kind of color or style will work for this project?
• Sketching- Thumbnails; Sketch to get your thoughts out and  to work through ideas. Placement of your elements.
• Execute- Compose piece of art together. Try techniques, explore possible options, and analyze the outcomes.
• Critique and Revise- Take a step back and look at your design with an objective eye.

rule of thirds- imaginary lines drawn dividing the frame of your camera into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. (below)

• place the important subject where the lines intersect.
• place the horizon lines to the top or bottom of the horizontal divider.
• for close up, use whole screen.

leading lines- use the lines created within the foreground of the composition to lead viewer's eye through photo.


lines can draw attention to one or more intended subjects or a single focal point.


point of view- change the way your subject is perceived by changing the camera position.


tall pictures, take looking upwards.


take towards to see more of it.


simplicity- keep your background simple & clear of clutter. move yourself to make it more interesting. mood gets changed by background.


chaotic composition will cause viewer  to look away.

Semester Reflection

In this class, i've learned many things. At the beginning of the year I learned how to use this computer from  the photo booth, saving files, opening the drop box and global folder, and short cuts on the keyboard. Then I started learning how to use Illustrator and Photoshop. I also learned how to create new layers, change the colors, and clipping masks. I've discovered that photoshop and illustrator is some what the same but different. I think using photoshop is much easier. For next semester, i would want my grade to go up higher. Finally, i would like to learn how photoshop a picture with effects.

- Yes, I learned that serifs are the curled ends of a letter but not always curly.
