#3 Hieroglyphics and the Egyptians| 3,000 BC

In the sixth century BC, what three civilizations invaded Egypt? Persians, Romans, and Greeks.


Post an example of the inside wall(s) of an Ancient Egyptian temple. (ABOVE)


What was discovered on the inside of the temples? Carved and painted images on every wall and surface.

Scholars believe that Ancient Egyptians were inspired and influenced by which written language? Combination of logographic and alphabetic elements.

What is the difference between logographic and alphabetic elements? One represents objects or ideas.

The term Hieroglyphic derived from what two Greek words? Hiero= sacred and glyphics= engraving/ writing

What is a scribe? A person that reads and writes.

Who else was trained to read and write? Why? Military leaders so they could communicate better while in battle.

What is papyrus and how was it made? Substrate made from reeds native to Egypt. They wet the reeds placed cross over each other and flattened them so they can dry then rubbed with a stone until it becomes smooth.

What is a substrate?

What were the Books of the Dead? Writing a set of scrolls for Pharaohs and other important Egyptians.

How did Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics become a forgotten language? Roman emperor closed down Christian temples.

What is the Rosetta Stone? Where was it discovered? It was discovered in 1799 and in Egypt.

What three languages are included on the stone? Egyptian hieroglyphics, demotic, and Greek.

Why couldn't the text on the Stone be deciphered? A chunk of the stone was missing.

Who finally deciphered the text? What was his breakthrough? Jean Francois Champollion and when he was able to match up the missing pieces of the stone.


Why does the interpretation of the Rosetta Stone have such significance? Because we know a great language that was brought by the Egyptians.
